Today, more than half of the world’s population lives in cities; cities that are growing each year by approximately 70 million inhabitants. The conference aims to contribute to the understanding of urban societies as sites of cultural change that is not always peaceful and orderly, but instead often violent and destructive. Focusing on language, literature and questions of society and governance, the conference attempts to elucidate the constantly shifting formations of cultural, linguistic, and societal identities.
The Geisteswissenschaftliche Zentren Berlin (GWZ) jointly host the 3rd Borders & Identity conference. BIC2015 provides a meeting place for more than 80 researchers interested in interdisciplinary approaches to exploring urban fragmentation(s) from linguistic, literary, sociological, and historical points of view, or a combination thereof. The conference is organized in three parallel strands, each chaired by a corresponding GWZ-center (ZAS, Zentrum für Allgemeine Sprachwissenschaft; ZfL, Zentrum für Literatur- und Kulturforschung; ZMO, Zentrum Moderner Orient): Literature & Translation (ZfL), Language & Linguistics (ZAS), Society & Governance (ZMO).
Keynote Lectures:
- Norma Mendoza-Denton (UCLA Linguistic Anthropology):
Hemispheric Localism and Gang Membership among Latina/o Gangs in Northern California
- Tarek El-Ariss (University of Texas at Austin): The Sublime Now
- Timothy Moss (Leibniz Institute for Regional Development and Structural Planning (IRS), Erkner, Germany): Splintering Urbanism Revisited
A Roundtable discussion with Sanaa Alimia (SOAS/ZMO), Rudolf Gaudio (Purchase), Stefan Willer (ZfL) will discuss "New Perspectives on Interdisciplinarity?" with regard to current explorations of city life and urban developments.
