Der Preis des Zukunftsforums 2017 ging an Tobias Alter vom Institut für Angewandte Mikrobiologie der RWTH Aachen. In seiner Masterarbeit suchte er mittels Computer-Modellen des mikrobiellen Metabolismus Ansatzpunkte, um Produktionsraten bei fixen mittleren Wachstumsraten zu maximieren, indem Gene gezielt ausgeschaltet werden (gene knockouts).
Bei der Wachstumskopplung der Produktion von 2-Butanon in Pseudomonas putida KT2440 gelang es ihm, einen Engpass bei der Isoleucin-Biosynthese zu identifizieren. Der Preis des Zukunftsforums war in diesem Jahr mit 3000 Euro dotiert, die Hälfte davon stiftete die Firma Sartorius Stedim GmbH, Göttingen.
Tobias Alter erhält für seine Masterarbeit den Preis des DECHEMA-Zukunftsforums Biotechnologie.
