Prof. Dr. Ulrike Detmers, partner of the Mestemacher Group and professor at the Bielefeld University of Applied Sciences, is donating the "Elisabeth of Bohemia Prize", endowed with 3,500 euros, to celebrate the 400th birthday of the philosopher Elisabeth of Bohemia on 26 December 2018.
This prize will in future be awarded by the "Center for the History of Women Philosophers and Scientists" (HWPS) at Paderborn University. The prize will be awarded internationally and will be presented during the Libori Summer School 2019 at the Center HWPS. Ulrike Detmers also donates the annual prize "Woman manager of the year" among others.
The prize is dedicated to an outstanding philosopher of the present and in memory of Elisabeth of Bohemia (1618-1680), who was the eldest daughter of Prince Friedrich V. of the Palatinate and his wife Elisabeth Stuart, a granddaughter of Maria Stuart. In her time she was also a well-known European thinker and pupil of Descartes. He even dedicated his main work "The Principles of Philosophy" to her.
"To my knowledge, it is the first prize in honour of a woman philosopher throughout Europe and will now be awarded annually to honour an internationally renowned woman philosopher," says Prof. Dr. Ruth Hagengruber, director of the Center HWPS at the University of Paderborn.
"I have been fighting for many years to ensure that women get the place in society that they deserve," says Ulrike Detmers in an interview with Prof. Dr. Ruth Hagengruber.
In 2018 the prize was awarded as a single prize to the Canadian philosopher Lisa Shapiro of Simon Fraser University, Canada.
