Achille Mbembe was born in Cameroon in 1957. Today, the internationally leading postcolonial scholar teaches at the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg (South Africa). He is considered one of the most important African intellectuals, dealing with questions such as the implications of notions of a global world without borders, or the difficulties and opportunities of decolonizing knowledge. Only on the basis of respect for historical truthfulness, he believes, can a new relationship between Europe and Africa be forged.
After scholars such as Douglas R. Hofstadter, Georges Didi-Huberman, Judith Butler, Noam Chomsky, Bruno Latour, John Searle and Martha Nussbaum, the University of Cologne is proud to again welcome a scholar of international renown as Albertus Magnus Professor. The professorship was created in 2005 in honour of the medieval polymath Albertus Magnus (ca. 1200 to 1280), who served as provincial of the Dominican Order in Cologne. Albertus Magnus is also considered one of the spiritual fathers of the old University, which was founded in 1388.
