Anlässlich des 100. Geburtstags von Bartel L. van der Waerden (1903-1996) veranstaltet die Fakultät für Mathematik und Informatik der Universität Leipzig am 26. 11. 2003, von 15-18 Uhr, an seiner alten Wirkungsstätte, dem ehemaligen Hörsaal des Mathematischen Instituts in der Talstraße. 35 (heute Institut für Geophysik und Geologie), ein Gedenkkolloquium. Das Leipziger Mathematische Institut, an dem er von 1931 bis Kriegsende lehrte, wurde von ihm ganz maßgeblich geprägt. Berühmt ist sein Lehrbuch zur Algebra, das diesem Gebiet seine moderne Form gab. Er war jedoch ein vielseitiger Forscher mit wichtigen Arbeiten auch in vielen anderen Gebieten der Mathematik.
Prof. Dr. Friedrich Hirzebruch, langjähriger Professor und Gründungsdirektor des Max-Planck-Instituts für Mathematik in Bonn, hält einen mathematischen Vortrag zum Thema "Variationen zu einer Arbeit von van der Waerden : Algebraische Geometrie VIII. Der Grad der Graßmannschen Mannigfaltigkeit der linearen Räume Sm in Sn". Nach einer Teepause hält Dr. Rüdiger Thiele vom Karl-Sudhoff-Institut für Geschichte der Medizin und der Naturwissenschaften der Universität Leipzig einen historischen Vortrag über B. L. van der Waerden in Leipzig.
