New MOOC on Urban Air Mobility

Ulrich Meyer Corporate Communications Center
Technische Universität München

How can we keep traffic infrastructure from collapsing in the world's cities of several million residents or more? One way might take us upwards: Urban air traffic, the topic of a new Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) being offered by the Institute for LifeLong Learning at the Technical University of Munich (TUM) together with the Munich Aerospace research association.

According to forecasts, by 2030 approximately 60 percent of humanity will live in cities. Researchers are of the opinion that if we succeed in shifting some part of urban traffic from the streets to the air, it could help us continue to satisfy the basic human need for mobility. But first this will require the fulfillment of several technical, societal and legal preconditions.

This exciting and future-oriented topic is the subject of the MOOC "Urban Air Mobility". Online participants located anywhere in the world will be able to learn from the best scientists. This interactive MOOC for independent studies consists of ten modules, numerous attractive lessons, short videos, knowledge tests and opportunities to network.

Three TUM professors are taking part in the MOOC:

    • Prof. Klaus Drechsler does research on carbon composites https://www.asg.ed.tum.de/lcc/der-lehrstuhl/prof-dr-ing-klaus-drechsler/

    • Prof. Rolf Moeckel works on the analysis of traffic behavior https://www.mos.ed.tum.de/en/tb/start-page/

    • Prof. Constantinos Antonious' subject is transport systems https://www.mos.ed.tum.de/vvs/mitarbeiter/constantinos-antoniou
