Dahlem Humanities Center and Center for Modern Greece Announce New Fellowship

Dr. Japhet Johnstone Stabsstelle Presse und Kommunikation
Freie Universität Berlin

Deadline for fellowship applications: Friday, March 31, 2023

Dahlem Humanities Center (DHC) and the Center for Modern Greece (CeMoG) at Freie Universität Berlin are pleased to announce that they will be awarding the Patrick and Joan Leigh Fermor House Fellowship in cooperation with the Benaki Museum Athens. This program provides funding to two selected researchers from Freie Universität Berlin or another university in the Berlin University Alliance who have acquired their doctorate and are carrying out research in the humanities and cultural studies. Both fellowships will take place during the 2023/2024 academic year and last six weeks. Leigh Fermor House fellowships are residential, which means that fellows will stay in Kardamyli, Greece, to devote their time to research and writing. Early career researchers (postdocs) are eligible for a lump sum of 500 euros to help cover their travel costs. The upcoming fall term fellowships are from November 1 to December 15, 2023, while the upcoming spring term appointments are from February 15 to March 29, 2024.

As part of the Patrick and Joan Leigh Fermor House Fellowship Program the Benaki Museum is cooperating with three universities in total ‒ Freie Universität Berlin (Center for Modern Greece/Dahlem Humanities Center), Princeton University (Seeger Center for Hellenic Studies), and the University of California Los Angeles (Stavros Niarchos Foundation Center for the Study of Hellenic Culture). The fellows chosen from these institutions will all stay at Leigh Fermor House at the same time.

The fellowships are aimed particularly toward scholars who would like to conduct research on one of the many subject areas addressed by the Benaki Museum in Athens. The Benaki Museum’s collection covers not only all epochs of Greek history and culture, but also includes collections focusing on other world cultures, such as Islamic, Chinese, African, Pre-Columbian, American, and Korean art and culture. The topics of the research proposals must be related to these specializations.

The application deadline for the Leigh Fermor House Fellowship Program is March 31, 2023. The required application documents, criteria, and other information about the fellowship can be found on the Dahlem Humanities Center website.
