For the rankings compiled by the UK publication Times Higher Education (THE), scientists around the world are surveyed on the reputation of universities in research and teaching. In addition, the rankings incorporate data such as the number of publications per researcher, citations per publication, the teacher-student ratio, third-party funding raised from the private sector, patents and the degree of internationalization. These indicators are weighted according to the prevailing culture in the various subject areas. In the recently released main edition of the THE World University Rankings, TUM is number 30.

The Shanghai Rankings assess the research achievements of universities around the world based on the number of scientific papers published in important journals such as Nature and Science, the citation frequency of scientists, and the number of Nobel laureates and Fields Medal winners. In the latest main edition of the Shanghai Rankings, TUM is number 57.
