Public lecture by political scientist and author Emilia Roig to be held at Freie Universität on July 5, 2024, at 10:30 a.m.
The Diversity and Antidiscrimination Office at Freie Universität Berlin invites members of the public to an English-language lecture by intersectionality and antidiscrimination expert Dr. Emilia Roig. Her talk “Is Anti-Zionism Antisemitic? About the Weaponization of Antisemitism in Current Debates” will take place on Friday July 5, 2024, from 10:30 a.m. until 12 noon at the Henry Ford Building, Freie Universität Berlin. The lecture is part of a series of workshops and events that deal with antisemitism, Islamophobia, and racism at Freie Universität Berlin. Anyone with an interest in the topic is encouraged to attend.
In her public lecture on July 5, 2024, French political scientist Emilia Roig will explore the complex and contentious relationship between Zionism and antisemitism. The discussion will delve into historical and contemporary contexts, examining how accusations of antisemitism have been weaponized by numerous factions within the Zionist movement and the impact this has on political discourse, freedom of speech, and the global perception of the current situation in Gaza, Palestine, and Israel. The consequences of using accusations of antisemitism as a political tool, as well as the ethical implications for genuine efforts to combat antisemitism will be discussed.
As an author, political scientist, and activist, Roig tackles systematic inequalities and discrimination through an intersectional approach. She gives keynote speeches and workshops, advising companies, NGOs, and governments on topics such as intersectionality, discrimination, diversity, and inclusion. Roig has worked for Amnesty International, the United Nations, and the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ). She has also carried out teaching assignments at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin and Freie Universität Berlin. She founded the Berlin-based Center for Intersectional Justice (CIJ) in 2017.
