MHH prevention project against child sexual abuse offers places for group and individual therapy
In Germany, about 250,000 men between the ages of 18 and 75 are sexually attracted to children. Some do not succeed in controlling their inclinations permanently. To prevent sexual assaults on children from happening in the first place, the Hannover Medical School (MHH) has launched the “Don't Become an Offender” prevention project. The Clinic for Psychiatry, Social Psychiatry and Psychotherapy is still looking for participants for a current study to examine the effectiveness of short-term therapy.
“Don't become an offender” is a nationwide project. The Clinic for Psychiatry, Social Psychiatry and Psychotherapy has been involved in it since 2012. It offers free, anonymous and confidential treatment for people who have a sexual attraction to children and are seeking therapeutic help. The aim of the therapy is to enable clients to control their behavior in such a way that no sexual assaults occur and no child pornography material is used. Treatment usually takes place in group sessions. A special feature of the new study is that there is also the option of individual therapy for certain patients.
