The Federal Ministry for Education and Research, Technology and Space (BMFTR) is funding a research project on AI-supported analysis of large data sets in astrophysics and particle physics with three million euros. The project, SciFM, is coordinated by Prof. Dr. Luisa Lucie-Smith, Principal Investigator at the Excellence Cluster "Quantum Universe" at the University of Hamburg.
Physical theories can currently explain only a fraction of the universe. 95 percent of all energies in the universe remain beyond scientific analysis. How this so-called "dark energy" or "dark matter" is constituted can so far only be theoretically speculated. Experiments at particle accelerators or observations with modern telescopes generate data that are intended to provide answers based on experiments and observations. "The analysis of the vast amounts of data generated in this way opens up new possibilities for us through Artificial Intelligence," explains astrophysicist Luisa Lucie-Smith. She coordinates the project, which aims to develop a new generation of advanced AI tools, called foundation models.
"Instead of training smaller, specialized models for individual tasks, we want to create AI generalists with the foundation models that are trained on data from a variety of sources and can solve many different tasks," clarifies Prof. Dr. Gregor Kasieczka from the University of Hamburg, who is also part of the project team. The new models could, for example, be used to create comprehensive all-sky maps of the universe based on telescope observations at different wavelengths. Or they could be trained on jet events and shower particles from particle physics experiments such as the Large Hadron Collider at CERN.
Participating institutions in SciFM, besides the University of Hamburg, include Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich (LMU), the Technical University of Munich (TUM), Heidelberg University, and RWTH Aachen University. The BMFTR supports SciFM within the framework of the "ErUM Data" action plan.

You can combine search terms with and, or and/or not, e.g. Philo not logy.
You can use brackets to separate combinations from each other, e.g. (Philo not logy) or (Psycho and logy).
Coherent groups of words will be located as complete phrases if you put them into quotation marks, e.g. “Federal Republic of Germany”.
You can also use the advanced search without entering search terms. It will then follow the criteria you have selected (e.g. country or subject area).
If you have not selected any criteria in a given category, the entire category will be searched (e.g. all subject areas or all countries).
