Goethe University's Research Centre “Normative Orders” launches a lecture series exploring peace and security in post-liberal times.
FRANKFURT. How is the international peace and security order changing in the face of increasing conflicts and growing challenges to international norms and institutions? What are the consequences of post-liberal and illiberal conceptions of peace and security for international cooperation? And how do these developments affect the global security architecture? These questions will be addressed in the lecture series “Peace and Security in Post-Liberal Times” organized by the Research Centre Normative Orders at Goethe University Frankfurt during the 2026/27 winter semester.
The series will kick off with a lecture by Prof. Dr. Christopher Daase, Professor of International Organizations, on “Post-Liberal vs. Liberal Perspectives on Peace, Security, and Crises.” The English-language lecture will be held
on Wednesday, October 28, 2026, at 6:15 p.m.
in the “Normative Orders” Building, Room EG 01, Max-Horkheimer-Straße 2,
on Goethe University’s Westend Campus.
Guests are invited to continue the conversation at a reception following the lecture.
The international order of peace and security is under growing pressure: wars and armed conflicts are becoming more frequent, more violent, and more complex. At the same time, the international norms and institutions designed to prevent, mediate, and resolve conflicts are increasingly challenged, ignored, or deliberately undermined. Post-liberal and illiberal forms of political order are gaining prominence both domestically and internationally. Against this backdrop, the lecture series explores how our understanding and practices of peace and security are evolving, and what these shifts mean for international politics.
The series examines, among other issues, the impact of emerging technologies, the growing interconnectedness of domestic and international security, and the transformation of international institutions and governance structures. Individual lectures will explore different dimensions of the international peace and security architecture, ranging from neocolonial visions of order and deterrence to the United Nations’ role in peacekeeping, international arms control, and the implications of artificial intelligence for warfare and security.
The lecture series is organized by Prof. Dr. Lisbeth Zimmermann, professor of political science specializing in international institutions and peace processes at Goethe University Frankfurt and a member of the Research Centre Normative Orders. The lecture series is part of the research program “Turning Points: Normative Orders in Flux?”, funded by the Commerzbank Endowment Fund within the Stifterverband für die Deutsche Wissenschaft.
