Die Studierenden der TU München (TUM) erhalten zum Sommersemester 2007 eine neue, multifunktionale Chipkarte. Sie gilt als Studierendenausweis und ersetzt den alten Ausweis in Papierform. Die Karte ist zugleich Studentenausweis mit Lichtbild und Bibliotheksausweis. Darüber hinaus ist auch das Bezahlen in der Mensa und an den Kopiergeräten in der Bibliothek möglich.
Mit der Einführung der Karte folgt die TUM einem Wunsch der Studierenden. Die StudentCard begleitet ihre Besitzer das ganze Studium über. Die Gültigkeit ist auf einem Thermofeld aufgedruckt und kann nach erfolgreicher Rückmeldung jedes Semester an speziellen Automaten aktualisiert werden. Die Karte ist kostenlos und wird den Studierenden im Laufe des Sommersemesters per Post zugestellt. Im Einführungssemester wird der alte Papierausweis noch zusätzlich ausgegeben.
