Der Evolutionsbiologe und Autor des Bestsellers "Mutants" (dt. "Tanz der Gene") zeigt Ausschnitte aus seinem neuesten Dokumentarfilm "What Makes Us Human" und berichtet von seinen ernüchternden Erfahrungen mit den britischen Medien:
"Continental colleagues often tell of how much they admire the rôle that science plays in British public life. They look at the Royal Society of London and the Royal Institution of Great Britain, David Attenborough and Richard Dawkins, NATURE and NEW SCIENTIST, the BBC and Channel 4 - and wonder why their own equivalents seem so anemic by comparison. Are they right to think so? Is the Anglo-American Model worth emulating? One London scientist has his doubts. Armand Marie Leroi has travelled to the depths of the British media, contemplated its dark heart, and returned - though not unscathed. Tonight he tells of what he has seen."
A. M. Leroi PhD ist Dozent für Evolutionäre Entwicklungsbiologie am Imperial College London. Sein Werk "Mutants: On the Forms, Varieties and Errors of the Human Body" (2004) gewann den Guardian First Book Award. Basierend auf dem Buch entstand eine TV-Serie für Channel 4 und Discovery. Lerois Dokumentarserie zur menschlichen Evolution "What Makes Us Human" wurde im August 2006 auf Channel 4 erstmals ausgestrahlt. 2006 wurde Leroi für den EMBO Award for Communication in the Life Sciences nominiert.
Der Vortrag findet statt im Rahmen der Tagung:
Wissenschaftskommunikation im öffentlichen Raum. Welche Rolle spielen die Universitäten?
Veranstalter: Hermann von Helmholtz-Zentrum für Kulturtechnik der Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, Stifterverband für die Deutsche Wissenschaft e.V. und Wissenschaft im Dialog gGmbH.
