E.L. Doctorow ist Lewis und Loretta Glucksman Professor an der New York University und einer der bedeutendsten und profiliertesten Schriftsteller neuerer amerikanischer Literatur.
Mit seinen im 19. und 20. Jahrhundert angesiedelten Romanen gilt er als Erneuerer dieser literarischen Gattung. Doctorows literarische Werke zeichnen sich nicht nur durch ihre facettenreiche Schilderung der amerikanischen Gesellschaft, sondern auch durch ihre aktuelle Relevanz und ihr implizites politisches Engagement aus. Zu Doctorows vielfältigem literarische Oeuvre zählen Bücher wie Welcome to Hard Times (1960), Big as Life (1966), The Book of Daniel (1971), Ragtime (1975), Drinks before Dinner (1979), Loon Lake (1980), Lives of the Poets: Six Stories and a Novella (1984), World's Fair (1985), Billy Bathgate (1989), Jack London, Hemingway and the Constitution (1993), City of God (2000), Reporting the Universe (2003), The March (2005).
E.L. Doctorow wurde mit zahlreichen Preisen und Ehrungen ausgezeichnet, unter anderem mit dem National Book Award, der National Humanities Medal, dem National Book Critics Award und dem PEN/Faulkner Award.
