Vom 15. Juni bis zum 07. August 2001 ist Prof. Dr. Rolf Däßler als Gastprofessor an der Graduate School of Information and Library Science (SILS) der University of North Carolina (UNC) in Chapel Hill tätig. Die Graduate School of Information and Library Science in Chapel Hill ist die durch die Wirtschaft am höchsten bewertete Bildungseinrichtung auf diesem Gebiet in den USA.
Auf Einladung der Graduate School hält Rolf Däßler an der diesjährigen Summer School eine Vorlesung über Informationsvisualisierung. Die tägliche Veranstaltung geht über einen Zeitraum von fünf Wochen, beinhaltet Vorlesungen sowie Praktika und wird als Gastdozentur vom Deutschen Akademischen Austauschdienst gefördert.
Während seines Aufenthaltes arbeitet Prof. Dr. Däßler zusammen mit Prof. Dr. Greg Newby (SILS) und Prof. Dr. Gary Marchionini (IDL, Interactive Media Lab, UNC) an Problemen der Gestaltung von neuen Benutzeroberflächen für Informationssysteme im Internet. Rolf Däßler, der am Fachbereich Archiv-Bibliothek-Dokumentation die Heinz-Nixdorf-Stiftungsprofessur "Visualisierung von Datenräumen" innehat, ist einer der Wenigen, die in der Bundesrepublik Deutschland an diesem Thema arbeiten. In den letzten Jahren hat er drei populäre Fachbücher im Bereich Datenbanken, Virtual Reality und Visualisierung publiziert.
