Gastvortrag von Prof. W. Lance Bennett am 21. November im John F. Kennedy-Institut
Im Rahmen der Ernst Fraenkel Lectures am John F. Kennedy- Institut der Freien Universität Berlin spricht am Mittwoch, dem 21. November um 17.00, Uhr Prof. W.L. Bennett von der University of Washington in Seattle. Thema seines Vortrages ist: "Civic Engagement Crisis? Social Change and the Rise of Global Activism".
Lance Bennett ist einer der herausragendsten Analytiker des Verhältnisses von Medien, Partizipation und Demokratie. Nach seinem Studium in Yale, das er 1974 mit der Auszeichnung für die beste Dissertation in der US-amerikanischen Politikwissenschaft abschloß, konzentrierte sich seine Forschung auf die Rolle der Medien im Prozeß öffentlicher Meinungsbildung. Er ist Autor von sechs Büchern, darunter "News: The Politics of Illusion" (4. Auflage 2001), "The Governing Crisis: Media, Money and Marketing in American Elections" (2. Auflage 1996) und Co-Autor von "Taken by Storm: The Media, Public Opinion, and U.S. Foreign Policy in the Gulf War" (1994) sowie "Democracy and the Marketplace of Ideas: Communication and Government in Sweden and the United States" (1997). 1998 erhielt Bennett den Ithiel de Sola Pool Award der American Political Science Association. Die hiermit verbundene Ithiel de Sola Pool Lecture ist unter dem Titel "The Uncivic Culture: Communication, Identity, and the Rise of Lifestyle Policis" 1998 in PS: Political Science and Politics erschienen. 1999 hatte er die Lawrence M. Lombard Gastprofessur an der Kennedy School of Government, Harvard University, inne. Im Jahr 2000 zeichnete ihn die Universität von Uppsala in Schweden mit der Ehrendoktorwürde aus. Lance Bennett begründete 2000 das Center for Communication and Civic Engagement an der University of Washington, das sich der Forschung und Politikvermittlung im Bereich von Partizipation und bürgerschaftlichem Engagement widmet. Zusammen mit Robert Entman gibt Lance Bennett die Serie "Communication, Society and Politics" bei der Cambridge University Press heraus.
Die Distinguished Ernst Fraenkel Lecture Series wird von der Freien Universität und der Fritz Thyssen Stiftung gefördert.
Im Anschluss an die Vortragsveranstaltung findet ein kleiner Empfang im Kennedy-Institut statt.
