Dies ist das Ergebnis einer Studie der Griffith University und der University of Queenland, Australien, mit dem Titel "Home and Community Care and the Principle of Self-reliance: Implications for Older Australians". Erforscht wurde, wie viel Pflege und Unterstützung durch Freunde und Bekannte älteren Menschen zur Verfügung steht. Die Wissenschaftler befragten 400 Senioren im Alter von mindestens 65 Jahren und fanden heraus, dass Männer stärker unter den Folgen des Alleinlebens leiden. "Ältere Frauen haben stärkere soziale Netzwerke und pflegen mehr Kontakt zu Freunden und Familie." sagt Dozentin Nerina Vecchio von der Griffith University, "Soziale Beziehungen haben starke Auswirkungen auf die körperliche Gesundheit."
Während sich verheiratete Männer beim Aufbau und Erhalt sozialer Kontakte auf ihre Frauen verlassen könnten, hätten Witwer große Schwierigkeiten. Ein weiteres Problem: Viele ältere Männer nähmen keine Hilfe an.
