Shailza Jolly is AI Newcomer 2021

Christian Heyer DFKI Kaiserslautern
Deutsches Forschungszentrum für Künstliche Intelligenz GmbH, DFKI

PhD student Shailza Jolly is the award winner in the computer science category at the GI and BMBF AI Camp 2021. At the German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence (DFKI), she is researching the extent to which it is possible to have human-like conversations with chatbots if they are trained with only a handful of examples. Behind this is, among other things, the relevant question of whether small companies and startups can build robust and interpretable NLP systems without extensive computing infrastructure and large data sets.

Doctoral supervisor Andreas Dengel, Head of Smart Data & Knowledge Services Research Department at DFKI and Professor of Computer Science at the Technical University of Kaiserslautern, says, "How reliable language-processing systems are depends, among other things, on how well they are trained. Accordingly, research into efficient training methods is extremely relevant for the versatile use of AI assistance systems. We are very pleased with Shailza for receiving the AI Newcomer award and the recognition and visibility it brings for her research in this important field."

AI Camp 2021 - Outstanding talents and innovative ideas.

In the AI Camp project of the German Informatics Society e.V. (GI) and the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), 28 outstanding young AI researchers, artists and professionals from 5 different disciplines were up for election this year as AI Newcomer*s. Shailza Jolly, a PhD student at the Technical University of Kaiserslautern and the German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence (DFKI), was selected as the winner in the computer science category.

The award is intended to recognize outstanding talent from universities, research institutions, associations as well as foundations and companies whose innovative ideas are already driving the development of AI in Germany. In doing so, the various facets of AI research are to be made accessible to a broad public and incorporated into social discourse.

After a public voting process, the candidates were evaluated by a jury. The final 10 AI Newcomers 2021 were awarded at the AI Camp.
