Digital Transformation: How Platforms Change Work in Cities

Kathrin Anna Kirstein Kommunikation, Marketing und Veranstaltungsmanagement
Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin

How are digital platforms currently changing work in European cities? How can platform cooperatives benefit the digital economy? These questions will be answered at a digital workshop of the Platform Labour in Urban Spaces (PLUS) project on 24 February.

How is platform labour changing the work situation in European cities? How can platform cooperatives benefit the digital economy? These are the topics of a digital workshop by the project PLUS (Platform Labour in Urban Spaces) on 24 February , which has conducted research on the issue of platform work in seven European cities - Barcelona, Berlin, Bologna, Lisbon, London, Paris and Tallinn. The project is part of the EU Horizon 2020 Programme of the European Commission.

The event will present some key findings on platform work from the qualitative research in the project: an overview of who works in the platform economy, motivations to join platforms, important risks for workers and insights on the regulation of companies. In a second step, the seminar will present learnings from the pilot studies with platform cooperatives and possibilities of expanding such models to social entrepreneurship initiatives. Both inputs will be commented by two experts from a research perspective and an urban policy perspective.

The research for PLUS in Berlin is conducted by Prof. Manuela Bojadžijev and her team at the Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin: Dr. Stefania Animento, Dr. Moritz Altenried and Valentin Niebler. The event is part of the event series From Cities to Europe: Innovating Labour, Welfare and Policies in the Platform Economy that marks the finalization of the PLUS project. Two additional events in March and will introduce approaches to regulating the platform economy(March 7, 2022) and proposals for the social protection of platform workers (March 14, 2022).
