Dr. Jens Mittelbach ist neuer Direktor der Universitätsbibliothek der Europa-Universität Viadrina Frankfurt (Oder). Der promovierte Philologe (Anglistik) folgt auf Dr. Hans-Gerd Happel, der die Bibliothek der Viadrina seit 1995 – zunächst als stellvertretender Direktor und ab 2000 als Direktor – geleitet hat und zum 31. März 2025 in den Ruhestand geht. Während eines Festaktes am 25. März übergab Happel den Staffelstab der Direktion der Universitätsbibliothek an seinen Nachfolger Mittelbach.
Zu seinem Amtsantritt an der Viadrina sagte Jens Mittelbach: „Die Bibliothek muss offen sein in alle Richtungen, insbesondere auch nach draußen in die Bevölkerung. Bibliotheken sind Garanten für die Demokratieförderung: Sie sind Orte der gesicherten, verlässlichen und überprüften Information und sie sind Orte des Austausches und des Kontaktes. Nach diesen Grundsätzen sollten wir auch weiterhin arbeiten.“
Jens Mittelbach war zuvor von 2020 bis 2025 Leiter der Universitätsbibliothek Cottbus-Senftenberg und von 2010 bis 2019 Leiter der Abteilung Benutzung und Information an der Sächsischen Landesbibliothek – Staats- und Universitätsbibliothek Dresden.
