European summit of metrology experts: The General Assembly of EURAMET, the European metrology organization, is meeting in Berlin – hosted by the PTB.
European summit of metrology experts at the Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt (PTB): In the year of the 150th anniversary of the Metre Convention, representatives from all European metrology institutes are traveling to Berlin. The General Assembly of the umbrella organization EURAMET e. V., taking place from 2 to 6 June 2025, will bring the burning issues of the metrological community to the table: They want to carry on laying the foundation for economically successful technologies and for competitiveness in Europe by means of reliable measurements – from AI and the digital transformation of metrology to new materials to the second quantum revolution. Against the backdrop of geopolitical changes, they have to rely on strong solidarity between European countries.
“Accurate and reliable measurements are a trust anchor”, underlines Prof. Dr. Cornelia Denz, PTB’s President, who is welcoming approximately 100 delegates from all over Europe. “They cater for a strong world economy. The “Made in Germany” quality label would not have been possible without precision measurements!“
In order to ensure such high quality standards for the whole of Europe in the future as well, intensive exchange about current joint research projects and developing modern metrology for upcoming technologies and markets are on the General Assembly’s agenda.
“It is our central mission to strengthen the competitiveness of the European industry. For this reason, we support innovations and prepare for the future on a daily basis”, says Dr. Annette Röttger who is a member of PTB’s Presidential Board and is running for the position of Vice-Chairperson of EURAMET, who will be elected on Tuesday, 3 June 2025. As a convinced European, Dr. Röttger is sure: No country can win alone. In light of the concentrated economic power of China or the USA, Europeans have to stick together to be successful in the race for the technologies of tomorrow. For this purpose, preliminary research is essential in metrology.
Preliminary research means to prepare for the requirements of new technologies. AI, digital transformation and quantum technologies are current examples: How can the quality of algorithms or qubits be evaluated? How can quality standards be ensured in a digital world? Competition for the best quality will only be possible when criteria and suitable measurement procedures have been defined. Cornelia Denz says: “Metrology is what makes these new technology fields possible in the first place. We transform precision into progress!”
EURAMET:
EURAMET e. V. is the European Association of National Metrology Institutes. Its objective is to maintain and enhance a cost-efficient and internationally leading measurement infrastructure for Europe – for industry and research. This is the only way to accompany the transformation in the fields of energy, mobility and the circular economy in an optimal way. The EU-funded European metrology research (currently the “European Partnership on Metrology”, which will terminate in 2027) plays an important role in this endeavor because it allows preliminary research with regard to new technologies and therefore provides good competitive conditions for European companies.
