The renowned Shanghai Rankings recognize TUM's research achievements in several subjects as being among the best worldwide. TUM is in the top 10 for agricultural sciences and remote sensing, and in the top 25 for medical technology and ecology. In four other subjects, it ranks among the best 50 universities.
In the Shanghai Rankings, TUM is among the top 50 in the following subjects:

Developed at the Shanghai Jiao Tong University, key criteria for the Global Ranking of Academic Subjects are the number and citation rates of papers published, especially in leading journals in the respective fields. It also assesses the degree of international cooperation in the related research. In some areas, the number of major prizes awarded to scientists is also taken into account. These indicators are weighted according to the prevailing culture in the various subject areas.
In other internationally renowned subject rankings, TUM is among the best universities in further subjects. In the QS World University Rankings by Subject, it is ranked 20th in Data Science & Artificial Intelligence and 22nd in Chemistry as well as in Statistics & Operational Research.
In the THE World University Rankings by Subject, which evaluates broader subject areas, TUM is ranked 14th in Computer Science, 19th in Physical Sciences and 22nd in Engineering.
