TUM professor Johanna Pirker appointed to UN expert panel on AI

Julia Rinner Corporate Communications Center
Technische Universität München

The United Nations has appointed Johanna Pirker to the new Independent International Scientific Panel on Artificial Intelligence (AI). This high-level panel will assess the global opportunities and risks of AI from a scientific perspective, providing a sound basis for political and societal decision-making. Forty experts from around the world were selected from 2,600 applications. Pirker is a professor of N-Dimensional User Experience at the Technical University of Munich (TUM).

The panel's goal is to create globally recognized, scientifically independent assessments, close knowledge gaps on AI, and reliably assess its impact on the economy and society. By doing so, the panel aims to provide scientific insight into risk mitigation, promote innovation for the common good, and strengthen international cooperation.

Scientifically sound foundations for the use of AI

“Artificial intelligence is changing our society at a rapid pace. To use it responsibly and identify potential risks, it is crucial that we establish a shared, scientifically sound foundation. I am looking forward to contributing my perspective. Through my research, I am working at an important interface with AI, while also complementing it with a user-centered perspective. This is a crucial factor in thoroughly assessing the social impact, risks and potential of AI," says Johanna Pirker, Professor of N-Dimensional User Experience at TUM.

Pirker's research combines various disciplines such as AI, games research, virtual and augmented reality, human-computer interaction, data analytics, and EduTech. In July 2025, Pirker was appointed to TUM. Her career has included positions at ETH Zurich, Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München, Graz University of Technology, and a research stay at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
