In 2016, the idw general meeting welcomed the revised guidelines and recommended that the bodies responsible for communication in the idw member institutions embrace the guidelines for further improvement of the quality of their work. This includes a checklist with practical suggestions. Both documents are currently available in German only.
In addition, idw organises workshops with corresponding themes, such as the "20 Years of idw" conference and the annual conference of the Federal Association of University Communication in 2015 and in 2016 at its own general meeting, among others.
We are also happy to accept critical feedback on publications with idw - just as the connected press offices also do. But please keep this in mind: Your personal criteria often differ from those of other subscribers; what is "important" for you personally may be "irrelevant" to a different subscriber. And idw has to make do with a small staff in order to continue to offer you as a recipient a platform free of charge and free of ads.
Every day, idw invests time and energy in the quality assurance of published content. Although the content used by idw comes from idw member institutions, responsibility for the content is with their press offices. However, we do this:
We carefully choose member institutions, whose press offices may feed content to idw. idw is not a for-profit business, which aims to generate as much revenue with as many member institutions as possible; instead, we want to offer as much interesting science information as possible to our subscribers.
Each press officer is trained by us before he or she is allowed to disseminate content via idw - not only regarding the operation of the idw system (which includes correct rubrics), but also regarding the substantive requirements: All content carried by idw must have a reference to science, be free of ads, and the sender establishment must be at the centre. idw makes "Ten Tips for Successful Press Releases" available to press officers of its member institutions.
We randomly check the carried content. Formal mistakes, incorrect rubrics or content violations, such as the dissemination of advertising, are penalised by us. idw may terminate membership of an institution for repeat or flagrant violations. We review all requests that are conveyed to the press offices via the idw Expert Finder. The idw Expert Finder is reserved exclusively for journalistic research.
idw implements a positive quality incentive through the idw Award for Scientific Communication, which annually honours the best press releases of the year.
You can combine search terms with and, or and/or not, e.g. Philo not logy.
You can use brackets to separate combinations from each other, e.g. (Philo not logy) or (Psycho and logy).
Coherent groups of words will be located as complete phrases if you put them into quotation marks, e.g. “Federal Republic of Germany”.
You can also use the advanced search without entering search terms. It will then follow the criteria you have selected (e.g. country or subject area).
If you have not selected any criteria in a given category, the entire category will be searched (e.g. all subject areas or all countries).
