Dabei wird ein Membran gebundenes Protein, das Beta-Amyloid Vorläufer Protein, von einem ebenfalls in der Membran verankerten Protease-Komplex in zwei Teile zerschnitten. Der grüne, aus der Zeller herausragende Teil (grün), bildet zunächst kleinere Aggregate, die sich dann zu Plaques zusammenlagern. Forscher der Goethe-Universität die Struktur der C-terminalen Domäne von Presenelin und ihren Wirkungsmechanismus in der mit Wasser gefüllten Reaktionskammer (hellblau) aufgeklärt.
