Die Abbildung zeigt das Innere einer Schaltzentrale des Immunsystems, den Lymphknoten. Hier treffen die T-Zellen (grün und rot gefärbt) auf andere Zellen des Immunsystems, um gemeinsam mit diesen die Immunantwort zu koordinieren. Um in den Lymphknoten zu kommen, müssen die T-Zellen das Gefäßsystem (gelb gefärbt) verlassen. Hierzu sind Adhäsionsmoleküle wie das Integrin LFA-1 unverzichtbar. Störungen im Adhäsionssystem führen zu Immunmangelzuständen (Immundefizienzen) mit der Folge, dass sogar banale Infektionen lebensbedrohlich werden können.
