Die "Insel der superschweren Elemente" inmitten des "Meers der Instabilität" ? wie Forscher das Periodensystem sehen: Darstellung der bekannten Elemente in Form einer Hügelkette. Kernphysikalisch besonders stabile Elemente sind dargestellt als Bergspitzen. Die wolkenverhangene Insel ist die seit 40 Jahren theoretisch vorhergesagte Zone der superschweren Elemente. Der Pfeil zeigt auf das Element 112, mit dem nun erstmals chemische Untersuchungen durchgeführt wurden.
