Abb. Hans Schöler ist seit 2004 Direktor am Max-Planck-Institut für molekulare Biomedizin in Münster. Sein Forschungsgebiet ist die Stammzellforschung. Er untersucht die Eigenschaften von embryonalen Stammzellen, um herauszufinden, warum diese so verwandlungsfähig sind und warum sie während der Entwicklung diese Fähigkeit verlieren. Im Zusammenhang damit interessiert sich Hans Schöler auch für die Reprogrammierung: Wie kann man ausgereifte Zellen in ein frühes Stadium der Entwicklung zurückversetzen? Die Erkenntnisse der Forschung an embryonalen Stammzellen setzt er ein, um die Prozesse bei der Reprogrammierung ausgereifter Zellen besser zu verstehen.
