Sichtbare Objekte erzeugen neuronale Signale im Auge, die über das Zwischenhirn und den primären visuellen Kortex in höhere visuelle Areale gelangen. Ein Gesicht, auch wenn es aus anderen Objekten zusammengesetzt ist, aktiviert die sechs gelb markierten Areale im Temporalkortex. Sie sind hochspezifisch miteinander und nur schwach mit dem umgebenden Kortex verbunden.
