In every society, people in higher social classes are healthier than those in lower social classes. Why is this? Most analysts attribute this phenomenon to material inequalities in income or wealth generated by the structure of the economy. This research explores alternative explanations that locate the sources of health inequalities in the structure of social relations. It assesses these explanations against data drawn from fourteen OECD nations and considers the implications for public policy of this more expansive perspective.
Peter Hall is Krupp Foundation Professor of European Studies and faculty member in the department of government at Harvard University. His publications include Governing the Economy (1986), The Political Power of Economic Ideas (1989), Developments in French Politics I and II (1990, 2001), Varieties of Capitalism (2001), Changing France (2005), and Successful Societies (forthcoming) as well as more than sixty articles on politics and policymaking in Europe. Hall is co-director of the Successful Societies Program for the Canadian Institute for Advanced Research (http://www.cifar.ca).
His current research focuses on the distributive impact of efforts by European firms and governments to cope with international integration in the decades since World War II. He also conducts research on the relationship between social relations and population health across nations.
This lecture marks the beginning of the joint CES-WZB series.
