Since its founding, the Center for European Studies at Harvard University has fostered close ties with Germany. The CES's John F. Kennedy Memorial Fellowship Program began in the 1960s and it was named a Center of Excellence in the 1990s by the German government. Through its graduate training, support for undergraduate research and public programming, the Center has fostered activities that promote an understanding of Europe and particularly Germany.
From 2002 through 2008, the CES organized a series of public "Berlin Dialogues", in cooperation with academic institutions in Berlin. In 2009, the CES joins forces with the WZB (Wissenschaftszentrum Berlin für Sozialforschung). The two pillars of this partnership are participation of WZB postdocs in the CES fellowship program and visits and lectures of CES/Harvard faculty at the WZB.
