Soils are an essential part of human life. They provide us not only with food but also with renewable energy, they filter and transform substances of anthropogenic origin, provide raw materials, are the habitat of a vast range of organisms, protect us from flooding, and are part of our physical and cultural heritage. Particularly in countries like Brazil access to fertile land is also one of the key issues for overcome poverty. Thus our future is closely related to soils and keeps them stable in all their features and functions. In practice, agricultural soils and their vital properties and functions are highly endangered through anthropogenic activities: they are loaded with hazardous inorganic and organic substances, they are structurally damaged by inappropriate tillage systems, their entire biodiversity diminished through intensive agriculture and last but not least the area of fertile land is decreasing through the ever expanding space required for roads and buildings and through erosion.
The workshops ”Better Soils for Better Life“ will highlight the effects of changing land use and its impact on the environment in Brazil and Germany. Leading Brazilian and German specialists of soil and environmental chemistry, soil physics, soil and environmental legislation, agriculture and cropping production will be invited to share their research results and views on key aspects of soil protection and soil improvement against the background of sustainable development.
Two workshops under the headline “Better Soils for Better Life” are scheduled: part one with the subtitle “Protecting our future through soil conservation” is dedicated to aspects on soil protection and part two entitled “Challenging perspectives for our future” is dedicated to aspects on improving properties and functionality of soils, shall be held in spring 2011 at ESALQ in Piracicaba, Brazil.
The expected outcome of the action is a summary of German and Brazilian knowledge in a nutshell with the intention to provide landmarks for future development in research and politics for the benefit of life in both, and many other countries.
