The congress commemorates the 100 years anniversary of Prof. Lorenz HiltnerŽs presentation of the Rhizosphere concept in 1904. He envisioned both beneficial and pathogenic microbes are attracted by root excretions, leading to improved plant nutrition or pathogenesis. Since this pioneer work, tremendous advances have been achieved over the last decades in the understanding and modelling of the numerous and complex biological, and
also physical and chemical interactions occurring at the plant root - soil interface. More recently, the functional genomic approach of plant-microbe interactions has opened fascinating new horizons for a fundamental understanding of the symbiotic or pathogenic molecular mechanisms involved. A major challenge from now on is to make better use of this new knowledge, to manipulate and manage such rhizosphere interactions for improving plant nutrition, plant health, ecosystem diversity, bioremediation or rehabilitation of contaminated and man-disturbed environments.
This conference will be a unique forum for exchanging innovative ideas and methods for studying the rhizosphere today and tomorrow.
The EU-COST Action 631 "Understanding and Modelling Plant-Soil Interactions in the Rhizosphere Environment (UMPIRE)" together with the Technical University Munich and the GSF-National Research Center for Environment and Health in Neuherberg/ München cordially invite all interested scientists to actively participate in this unique interdisciplinary congress.
