It has been 20 years since the Soviet Union fell apart into 15 countries of the most various sizes and levels of development. Economic allies became competitors practically overnight. Competition for capital, people and technology flared up both between and within the newly created states.
The Berlin Institute for Population and Development has analysed the demographic future of Russia and the other Soviet successor states at regional level. The new study presents key developments of the past decades that have an impact on the future – from low birth numbers and the falling life expectancy in the 1990s over the enormous migration flows to current educational reforms. Thereby, a detailed picture of the central challenges for politics and society in the various countries emerges.

will be presented by the authors Dr. Reiner Klingholz and Stephan Sievert from the Berlin Institute as well as Sergey Zakharov from the Higher School of Economics.
