Design Concept and its role in the education and practice of interior designers
Interior design matters, affecting us in ways far broader than most people realize. With an understanding of the balance needed between pragmatic requirements and subjective qualities, designers create environments that influence our behaviors, relationships and experiences. Within interiors practice, the frequently-used, often-misunderstood term design concept is commonly associated with the creative process.
Many people believe that creativity arises from abrupt ‘light-bulb’ moments of inspiration but in reality, creative thinking and problem solving are highly process-oriented activities. The design process provides a framework for the critical analysis and exploration of problems and the generation of potential responses. This research aims to locate design concept within the design process to gain a deeper understanding of the role it plays in the education and practice of interior designers.
This ongoing investigation surveys how design concept is defined, utilized and perceived using information gathered in five cities and within seven prominent international institutions in Toronto, New York, London, Glasgow and Berlin. Practitioners, faculty and students are being recruited to gather insights into their understanding of the topic. This presentation will provide a background of creative practices of interior designers and outline the current status of the research.
