ETH Zurich and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding. This provides the framework for the joint development of strategies in the area of scientific assessment, monitoring, early warning of environmental problems and for examining the inter-linkages between environment and social systems. The signing ceremony took place during a conference at ETH Zurich.
For several years, ETH Zurich has been engaged in a variety of areas related to development coperations. For 35 years, it has offered the Postgraduate Course on Developing Countries (NADEL). In addition, three years ago, ETH professors involved in development cooperation founded the Network for Development and Cooperation NIDECO, allowing ETH to promote both research and teaching in this field across its departments. This Friday, ETH Zurich has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the United Nations Environment Programme.
Framework for cooperation established
On Friday, ETH President Olaf Kübler and the Executive Director of the United Nations Environment Programme, Klaus Töpfer, signed a Memorandum of Understanding to formally establish the cooperation between ETH Zurich and UNEP. The memorandum serves as a framework for collaboration in the area of scientific assessment, monitoring, early warning of environmental change and examining the inter-linkages between environment and social systems. This is intended to enhance the scientific credibility, legitimacy, relevance and independence of environmental measures.
Science and technology are important for development
The memorandum between ETH Zurich and UNEP was signed at a conference organised by NIDECO and NADEL, at which researchers and policy makers highlighted the role of science and technology in achieving the UN Millennium Development Goals: By the year 2015, inter alia, the proportion of people suffering from hunger and extreme poverty should be reduced by half compared to 1990. The conference at ETH Zurich pointed out that poverty reduction in developing countries through global environmental policies serves the best interests of the industrialised nations. Equally, in the long term, the investment to promote training in developing countries serves the economic interests of both North and South.
