FIBAA appointed as Dutch assessment agency

Dipl.-Päd. Detlev Kran, MBA(USA) Marketing & PR
FIBAA

NVAO (Nederlands-Vlaamse Accreditatie Organisatie/Accreditation Organisation of the Netherlands and Flanders) has appointed FIBAA as the seventh assessment agency for Bachelor and Master programmes in the Netherlands.

As in Germany, Bachelor and Master programmes in the Netherlands have to be quality-assured (i.e. accredited) by organisations granted approval to do so. As of 1 January 2006, FIBAA (Foundation for International Business Administration Accreditation) became one of seven "VBIs" (Visiterende en Beoordelende Instanties/visiting and assessment bodies) to be registered in the Netherlands as having been granted permission to assess Dutch programmes of study. The institutions of higher education (HE) present the agencies' accreditation reports to the NVAO (www.nvao.nl), which then makes the final decision. Apart from FIBAA, the assessment agencies appointed included another German organisation - ASIIN (Fachakkreditierungsagentur für Studiengänge der Ingenieurwissenschaften, der Informatik, der Naturwissenschaften und der Mathematik e.V./an accreditation agency specialised in accrediting degree programmes in the fields of engineering, informatics/computer science, the natural sciences and mathematics).

In addition to the national requirements, the NVAO procedure is based on the requirements in the Code of Good Practice drafted by the ECA (European Consortium for Accreditation in Higher Education) and the accreditation requirements specified by ENQA (European Association for Quality Assurance in Higher Education). As well as being accredited in Germany, FIBAA has thus now successfully undergone a second approval procedure in another European country.

To date, FIBAA has accredited some 250 economics-related Bachelor and Master programmes at various types of HE institution, primarily in Germany but also in Austria, Switzerland and other countries. Granting of accredited status to new programmes provides proof of their quality and ensures that they are accepted by the academic sphere, of professional relevance and well-received by the market. So far, around 15% of the requested accreditation procedures have resulted in accreditation being refused.
