1st European Conference on "Production Technologies in Shipbuilding"

Dr.-Ing. Karl-Heinz Kutz Presse- und Kommunikationsstelle
Universität Rostock

organized jointly with the 10th Shipbuilding Day of Mecklenburg - Western Pomerania

Innovative ship designs and optimized production techniques are key factors for the success of European shipbuilders in the market for complex one-of-a-kind ships. German and European shipyards benefited significantly from the worldwide increase in orders, resulting in order books well filled for the coming years.

Maintaining and improving this market position requires developing strategies to improve safe and environmentally friendly ships with decreased life cycle cost. Improvements in manufacturing processes will increase productivity and quality. Research, development and innovation are gaining importance to improve competitiveness in a global market.

The North of Germany, in particular the Federal State of Mecklenburg - Western Pomerania stretching along the Baltic Sea Coast is an important focal point of the European maritime industry. Modern shipyards, leading equipment suppliers and a well developed infrastructure of research centres and universities are working together to improve innovation with a strong focus on production technologies.

A sequence of local and European conferences and workshops have been organized in this region during the last couple of years, such as the nine Shipbuilding Days in Mecklenburg - Western Pomerania, bringing together scientists from universities and research centres with experts from shipyards and suppliers or the Conferences on Production Technologies, organized in Wismar with the participation of leading German and European experts.

The organizers of those two events, the Center of Maritime Technologies (CMT), the German Society of Naval Architects (STG), the Department of Mechanical Engineering and Marine Technologies of the University of Rostock, IMAWIS GmbH and the Association of German Engineers (VDI) have decided to join forces to organize an annual Conference on Ship Production and related technologies aiming to become one of the leading events on this topic in Europe.

The First European Conference on "Production Technologies in Shipbuilding" will be organized jointly with the 10th Shipbuilding Day of Mecklenburg - Western Pomerania on October 26th and 27th, 2006 at the Marina Residence "Hohe Düne" in Rostock-Warnemünde. The focus of this first conference will be on innovative material and structures for ships. Presentations from leading European experts will inform about new design solutions, manufacturing and joining processes and applications.

The conference will be a unique opportunity to present research results, to learn about latest developments and applications and to meet experts from Germany and Europe. The conference will be accompanied by smaller workshops, like the ENCOMAR Brokerage Event on Production Technologies, where participants from the new EU member and associated states will present their research capabilities and needs. This workshop will be used to initiate and prepare new research proposals for the 7th Framework Programme of Research and Development of the European Union. Moreover, participants to the conference will have the opportunity to visit shipyards and research centres in the region.

An accompanying exhibition opens the opportunity to present products and services related to the topic of the conference to a European audience.

The conference programme and the registration form will be issued approximately ten weeks before the conference. For further information and if you are interested in giving a presentation at the conference please refer to the website www.schiffbautag.de or contact the organizers.
