Closing Date for the Internationally Recognized Master-Program is July 15, 2006; Presentation of the B.Sc./ M.Sc./ Ph.D.-Program at the University Hospital Göttingen on June 7 and 22, 2006
(ukg) Starting in the winter term of 2006-2007, the Faculty of Medicine at the Georg August University of Göttingen for the first time offers the intensive Master's Course "Molecular Medicine". Closing date for application for the internationally recognized Master's Program is July 15, 2006 for German citizens and for those who are considered to hold rights equal to German applicants (according to the Regulations on Admission to Institutions of Higher Education in the state of Lower Saxony). The 18-months Master's Course "Molecular Medicine" concludes with the degree of a Master of Science (M.Sc.). Graduates will be offered the opportunity to begin a dissertation project. Outstanding students can start with their Ph.D. project after one year. Informative meetings on the Master's Course are held on June 7 and June 22, 2006, at the University Hospital Göttingen, Germany. The Study Course in "Molecular Medicine" aims at students who are interested in doing natural science-based research in the field of medicine. It offers students an alternative to studying Human Medicine and to becoming a practicing physician. The Program qualifies for employment in accordance with the internationally recognized system of B.Sc./ M.Sc. study courses.
The Master's Program in "Molecular Medicine" builds on the basic knowledge in natural sciences and medicine gained in the Bachelor's Program "Molecular Medicine" (since 2003 in Göttingen) or another equivalent study course. The first students will complete the Bachelor's Program in August 2006. During the first year of the Master's course, the module, "Special Molecular- and Pathological Aspects of Organ Systems", expands upon the clinical aspects of molecular medicine. Further compulsory modules cover aspects of molecular immunology, bacteriology, human genetics, and oncology. The last six months of the Master's Program are dedicated to the Master's thesis. During the Ph.D. thesis, which lasts a maximum of three years, a scientific question is addressed within one of the research laboratories in the Faculty of Medicine or in an associated institute. The complete Study Program "Molecular Medicine" is based on the internationally approved Bachelor-/ Master concept. The basic Bachelor Course takes three years and closes with the Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) degree. In July 2004 the Zentrale Evaluierungs- und Akkreditierungsagentur Hannover (ZEvA) certified the study course according to international standards (e.g. according to the "European Credit Transfer System", ECTS).
The re-organization of study courses into Bachelor- and Master-Courses aims at establishing international standards in academic education. Courses are organized in "modules" or "training-units". Individual units are evaluated according to the internationally accepted ECTS-credit point system. Academic achievements are therefore internationally comparable and are mutually accepted by the participating nations. This enables students to continue their studies abroad if desired. Moreover, academic qualifications directly meet the requirements of the job market.
