Chemnitz becomes centre of mass-printed electronics
The Federal Ministry of Education and Research promotes the Growth Core project "printronics" with 5.3 million Euros

An alliance of five medium-sized companies and two research institutions located in Chemnitz and the southwest Saxon region is looking forward to receiving funding by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research: The ministry supports the regional Growth Core printronics with 5.3 million Euros. The Growth Core has developed around the company printed systems Ltd., situated in Chemnitz, which is the world's technology leader in the field of mass-printed polymer electronics. printronics has a total project budget of 8 million Euros.

True to the slogan "printed electronics everywhere", the Growth Core printronics aims at establishing a market leadership for mass-printed electronics products within the next ten years. In the long run, printronics is supposed to establish as an international competence and production centre for mass-printed polymer electronics. In addition to printed systems GmbH, the Growth Core includes the following companies: 3D Micromac AG, Chemnitz, GEMAC mbH, Chemnitz, GETT Gerätetechnik GmbH, Treuen (Vogtland) and KSG Leiterplatten GmbH, Gornsdorf. The Fraunhofer Institute for Reliability and Microintegration Chemnitz and the Institute for Print and Media Technology at Chemnitz University of Technology (pmTUC) support the Growth Core in research matters.

The work of printronics focuses on printing function polymers with electrical properties by means of mass-printing methods. According to a series of studies, the future prospects for mass-printed electronics are promising. As believed by members of the Organic Electronics Association, a working group of the VDMA (Verband Deutscher Maschinen- und Anlagenbau -- German Engineering Federation), a new booming mass market for printed electronics will develop between the conventional printing market and the conventional eletronics market.

"On the one hand, printing function polymers by means of mass-printing methods allows for equipping conventional print products with electronic functions." Andreas Ehrle, spokesperson of the Growth Core, states that in this regard printronics focuses especially on developing and refining products and solutions for the game industry, for example playing cards, as well as paper keyboards in order to establish costumer relationships. "On the other hand, the companies and research partners that are involved in our Growth Core develop powerful solutions based on silicon-based electronics as well as novel electronic print products. In this domain, we prepare for bringing laminar pressure sensors, novel circuit boards, fully mass-printed digital RFID tags, etc. on the market within the next few years", Ehrle continues.

    Keyword: polymer electronics

In 1976, the Americans Alan Heeger and Alan MacDiarmid as well as their Japanese colleague Hideki Shirakawa discovered that certain plastics, which consist of molecules that repeat their structure regularly in long chains, so-called polymers, conduct electric current. In polymer electronics, these metallic properties are used for producing electronic devices by combining conductive, semiconductive and insulating polymers. At present, organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) for displays and illuminated displays are the best-known devices of this kind. In the future, solar cells, RFID chips or sensors based on polymers will be produced, too. Especially the production by means of mass-printing methods promises major advantages compared to conventional electronics production. The productivity is 10.000 to 100.000 times higher than with conventional production and structuring methods used in silicon electronics. In 2000, the discoverers of conductive polymers have been awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry.

    Keyword: Growth Core

Since 2001, the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) supports initiatives with mid- and long-term market potential with the programme "Innovative Regional Growth Cores". From the very beginning, the ideas and activities of regional innovation alliances should be oriented towards an economic implementation of the technological developments at the market. Development support is granted for three years.
Up to now, the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) has supported 19 projects - thereof 7 in Saxony. Presently, 14 projects receive BMBF funding.
