Good for fine art and for the environment

Valuable paintings are often transported in packing cases protected by individually cut padding material. Afterwards, the packing cases frequently end up being discarded as waste. A reusable transport container can be used to pack paintings of a wide variety of formats.

Visits to museums and art galleries are becoming increasingly popular as a leisure activity, and organizers wanting to keep the interests of their visitors must be able to offer them a greater variety in the exhibitions presented. But that means that the paintings, which are very sensitive, often have to be transported over long distances from city to city, or even across continents. They have to be packed very carefully to ensure that they survive the journey without damage. Until now, this has been done using special packaging for each particular painting - preferably wooden packing cases protected with padding material cut to shape specifically for that particular work of art. Often, these packing cases are discarded as waste after being used once only. On behalf of hasenkamp Internationalen Transporte GmbH & Co. KG in Cologne, researchers at the Fraunhofer Institute for Material Flow and Logistics IML in Dortmund have developed a transport container that is reusable and offers reliable protection against external shocks.
The new clima box encloses the variable transport frame with a special rectangular support of flat aluminium tubing to hold the paintings. The frame can be adjusted to any height, width and depth, allowing works of art of diverse formats to be transported and even stored in the same transport packaging. The travelling frame itself is equipped with special supports, to ensure that the valuable contents reach their destination undamaged, on their journey by road, rail or air. And taking their efforts a step further, the scientists came up with yet another idea and developed a purpose-built shock absorber system. Elastomeric shock absorbers are installed at all four corners, between the travelling frame and the climate container. These absorbers dampen vibrations when the case is moved. Gerrit Hasselmann from the IML: "We studied the shock absorber systems available on the market when designing our structure, and tested and optimized the overall construction to resist vibrations and shock impact". The risk of causing damage by impact to an irreplaceable painting during transport has now been minimized. There are other advantages too: Packing and unpacking the paintings takes a lot less time, and there is less waste packaging material because the cases can be reused. The company hasenkamp has started series production of the new system under the name hasenkamp-variosystem®, and is already using the containers in big museums.
