Know-how on Audio Coding Makes Progress with New Applications

Elvira Gerhäuser Unternehmenskommunikation
Fraunhofer-Institut für Integrierte Schaltungen IIS

High quality low bit-rate audio coding continues to be improved at the Fraunhofer Institute for Integrated Circuits in Erlangen, Germany, which is the main developer of MPEG Layer-3 and one of the main contributors to the new
MPEG-2 Advanced Audio Coding AAC. Completely new applications, devices and software tools are arising from
    this technology.
A brand new digital jukebox features a play list of about 750 songs coded with MP3 and protected against illicit use
by the Multimedia Protection Protocol MMP. It works entirely without clumsy push buttons or wasteful CDs; typing
title sheets is no longer required either. Users make their choice out of the play list on a 17" touch screen. The
customized updates of music are brought to them online, no hardware is needed. The Jukebox will be shown on
the International Toy Fair in Nuremberg.

    The New Fast MP3 Encoder
The Fraunhofer Institute in Erlangen has extended its MP3 product line with a new MP3 encoder, designed for
speed with only very little change in compression efficiency. Using its know-how from the highest quality MP3
reference code, Fraunhofer has built a fast encoder which runs ten times faster than real-time on a Pentium III 500 and three times faster than real-time on a Pentium 200 MMX when encoding 44.1kHz stereo data. Moreover, the new software supports variable bit rate encoding, offering higher audio quality compared to constant rate coding at
the same average bit rate. The fast encoder provides a comprehensive interface for easy integration into any
software framework. The new software has already been integrated into products such as MusicMatch or Sonic Foundry.

    Low Delay AAC

The MPEG-4 Low Delay Audio Coder (LD-AAC) has been designed to combine the advantages of perceptual audio coding with the low delay necessary for two-way communication. The codec has been derived from ISO/MPEG Advanced Audio Coding (AAC) and was submitted by Fraunhofer. The most stringent requirements are a maximum algorithmic delay of only 20 ms and good audio quality for all kinds of audio signals including music. The Low Delay AAC codec bridges thus the gap between speech coding schemes and very high quality audio coding schemes. Two-way communication with LD-AAC is possible on usual analog telephone lines and via ISDN
connections. Fraunhofer is the first company to present a fully MPEG-4 compliant LD-AAC real-time codec which
uses one Motorola DSP 56303 for the encoder and another one for the decoder.
    Audio Watermarking & Scrambling
Along with FraunhoferŽs activities for the protection of composersŽ and artistsŽ rights, technology demonstrations
of the new watermarking system are featured, allowing a fast and robust embedding of data into both coded and uncoded audio material. Another protection technology, FraunhoferŽs audio scrambler, allows the protection of compressed audio content by causing a controlled quality degradation during unauthorized playback, while preserving full fidelity when decoded with the correct key.
Scientists and engineers of the Fraunhofer Institute for Integrated Circuits like to invite you to visit their booth at "Die Region Nürnberg e.V." on the International Toy Fair in Nuremberg between hall 5 and 6.
