Siemens opens central research laboratory in China - Investments of around €80 million planned by 2010

Siemens Corporate Technology (CT) today celebrated the official opening of its "Siemens Corporate Technology China" research center in Beijing. Siemens intends to invest around 80 million euros by 2010 in the two Chinese locations Beijing and Shanghai, where over 300 scientists will conduct research on new environmental, energy, healthcare, and automation technologies.
"The People's Republic of China is one of the most important pillars of our business in the Asia-Pacific region and is gaining increasing importance in our operating business globally," declared Prof. Hermann Requardt, member of the Siemens AG Corporate Executive Committee and head of Corporate Technology. "In selecting a new research location, proximity to our customers is the decisive factor - as well as proximity to production locations and outstanding universities." With over 31,000 employees, Siemens is one of the largest employers among foreign-owned enterprises in China.

China is booming, and the rising economic power has particular strategic importance for Siemens. With its new research location in Beijing, Siemens plans to increase its presence in the region and at the same time expand its role as a trendsetter in the development of innovations. Siemens Corporate Technology China is today Siemens' largest major research center in the Asia-Pacific region. The enterprise has already hired 200 highly qualified scientists, and that number will grow to 300 by the year 2008. Around 80 million euros will be invested in the location over the next few years.
At the opening ceremony for the Beijing research location, Vice-Chairman of the National Development and Reform Commission Zhang Xiaoqiang underscored the Chinese government's interest in a mutually profitable collaboration with Siemens over many years. Innovations are the key to China's social and economic development, he said, noting that Siemens was one of the leading international enterprises in this regard.

Prof. Hermann Requardt, member of the Siemens Corporate Executive Committee and head of Corporate Technology, stressed the importance of the location within the Siemens research network. "Innovation does not happen by chance. It is the result of hard work and it must be managed," Requardt said. "And that includes having an international research network with locations in all growth markets and technological hot spots." Dr. Richard Hausmann, head of the Siemens China Regional Company, also pointed toward China's important role in Siemens' global business and outlined his vision of a future cooperation between Siemens Corporate Technology China and the R&D units of the Siemens Groups in the "Middle Country." With a view toward securing China's technological future, he looked forward to innovations that would meet China's needs and at the same time produce valuable benefits for the people of the country. "With 31,000 employees, we are one of the largest foreign-owned employers in the country," noted Hausmann.

Reinhold Achatz, head of the technology departments of Siemens Corporate Technology, shares this vision of the new research center's work. "We intend to focus in China particularly on developing technologies and solutions that are optimally tailored to the Chinese market and at the same time have the potential to be successful in the global market as well."

According to Dr. Arding Hsu, head of Corporate Technology China, these innovations should be, simply put, SMART - simple, maintenance friendly, affordable, reliable, timely to market. "That is our primary objective, and we look forward to the associated challenges that lie ahead of us."
