Last year, Siemens consolidated its strong position in terms of international patent applications. In the current ranking published by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) in Geneva, Siemens again took third place with 1,480 patent applications behind Phillips (2,495) and Matsushita (2,344). "Filing of patent applications at the WIPO is becoming an increasingly important means of obtaining worldwide patent protection for our R&D activities," said Prof. Dr. Winfried Büttner, Head of Corporate Intellectual Property.
Last year, Siemens filed a total of 1,480 patent applications with the WIPO. Applying for industrial property rights via the WIPO is far less expensive and time consuming than filing individual applications in as many as 184 member states. This is because of the Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT) procedure applied at the WIPO, which governs international cooperation in the field of patent protection.
Siemens has further strengthened its position on important international markets with 1000 applications each in China and the U.S., and several hundred each in Japan, India and Korea filed using the PCT procedure. In particular, the high sales growth rates in the medical technology and energy sectors and in infrastructure projects in Asia call for intensive expansion of patent protection there.
"In the last financial year, the Siemens application fields Energy & Environmental Care, Healthcare and Automation & Control as well as Industrial & Public Infrastructures each accounted for one third of our patent applications," said Büttner. "We are selectively strengthening our patent stock in these Siemens growth sectors."
The PCT procedure is a good method for expanding the patent portfolio in the important markets and has already assisted us effectively with the development of the European patent portfolio, especially in the major European countries France, Britain and Italy.
