The physician and developmental biologist Dr. Kai Martin Schmidt-Ott, formerly of Columbia University in New York, will establish and head an Emmy Noether Junior Research Group at the Max Delbrück Center for Molecular Medicine (MDC) Berlin-Buch, Germany. The German Research Foundation (DFG) will fund the research group over a period of five years. Dr. Schmidt-Ott's research focuses on the embryonic development of the kidney and its perturbation in congenital diseases.
"Molecular processes which are characteristic of embryonic development are often reactivated in damaged epithelial cells of the adult kidney to facilitate regeneration," Dr. Schmidt-Ott explained. By studying these processes, he and his co-workers hope to generate the basis for novel approaches in diagnosis and therapy of renal diseases.
His special research interest is to study how in a complex and highly regulated process, stem cells develop into epithelial cells of the kidney. These epithelial cells line the tubules, a system of tiny tubes which in humans is many kilometers long.
Together with the glomerulus, these tubes comprise the "heart" of the kidney, the nephron. There waste products are collected from the blood and excreted as urine.
Dr. Schmidt-Ott was born on April 3, 1972 in Berlin, Germany. He studied medicine at Free University and completed his PhD in 2002. He continued his medical and scientific training at the University of Florida in Gainesville, USA, at the Franz Volhard Clinic for Cardiovascular Diseases at the Charité - Universitätsmedizin Berlin/Helios Klinikum Berlin-Buch and from 2003 - 2005 at Columbia University in New York, funded by the Emmy Noether Program. He stayed in New York until 2007 as researcher.
He has already received many awards - among them the Ernst Reuter Prize in 2003 for the best thesis of the year 2002 in Berlin, the Young Investigator Award of the German Society for Hypertension in 2001, and in 1998 a stipend of the Gottlieb Daimler and Karl Benz Foundation.
The program of the DFG is named after Emmy Noether (1882 - 1935), a Jewish mathematician from Erlangen, Germany, who was forced to emigrate to the USA in 1933. This program supports young researchers with international research experience to qualify them for a university teaching career.
