Applications until 15th August 2007
Applying for the Master Course "Technology and Resources Management in the Tropics and Subtropics" (M.Sc.) from the Institute for Technology in the Tropics, Cologne University of Applied Sciences, is still possible until the 15th of August.
The master course responds to the global challenges regarding the sustainable use of resources like water, energy and land. The raising complexity of today's socioeconomic questions related to the use of natural resources is addressed in the 4 semester master course through a strong interdisciplinary orientation. The master course provides engineers, architects, and natural scientists, with additional knowledge in sustainable technologies for the tropics and subtropics. The students can also set their own study focus by choosing elective modules as they progress in their studies. About 60% of the students come from foreign countries out of Europe; these students can apply for a limited number of scholarships. The teaching language is English in the first semester and German in the following two. The fourth semester is reserved for concluding the master thesis. The unique diversity of lectures and themes of this M.Sc. demands for a broad spectrum of lecturers. Together with the institutes professors and assistant staff other lecturers are also engaged in lecturing at the ITT which come from research institutes or from other sectors like the industry, bringing an immense practical experience in research and international cooperation. The lectures take place in the evenings from 17:00 to 21:00 pm. This gives the students the possibility to work on their professions parallel to the studies.
ITT graduates are in the position of applying the gained knowledge in addressing economical, social and ecological demanding problems. The ITT graduates are demanded professionals in national and international institutions for cooperation and development, private consultings and other organisations, like global acting companies. Specific features of the program are internationality and the interdisciplinary approach to teaching, a focus on practical work, and a modular structure which allows students to enrich their course of study by integrating modules from ITT's international partner universities. Five basic modules are obligatory for all students: 'project management', 'international cooperation', 'economics', 'environment and geography', and 'information and system sciences'. In addition to that, students can choose one of the concentration areas "Water Management", "Land Use Systems", "Renewable Energy" or "Sustainable Building". A special feature of this M.Sc. is the so called 'Semester Project', where the students in intercultural and interdisciplinary teams work out solutions for a case study of a typical international cooperation and development theme under appropriate tutoring. In this way students not only get knowledge on specific technical and scientific methods but develop also the capacity for working in international teams, developing their socio-cultural abilities, which is an exceptional quality when working in international markets. The fourth semester is reserved to conclude the master thesis, students normally return to their home countries, Asian, Africa or Latin-America, where they collect data for their empirical analysis.
