ScanBalt at the annual General Assembly during ScanBalt Forum 2007 yesterday elected former minister Prof. Dr. Dr. Hans-Robert Metelmann, Ernst-Moritz-Arndt University of Greifswald in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, as new Chairman of ScanBalt.
The leaving Chairman, Bo Samuelsson, says "It is a great honour and advantage for ScanBalt to have a highly respected and well known capacity as Hans-Robert Metelmann to chair the organisation the coming years. As representative for the Västra Götaland region I will enjoy collaborating with the new Chairman in further developing ScanBalt and in particular the role of the regions within ScanBalt".
The new Chairman, Hans-Robert Metelmann adds "I am looking forward to continue the work done by Bo Samuelsson since 2002. Together with the board of ScanBalt it will be a very interesting task to strengthen ScanBalt BioRegion as a cross-border innovation system exploiting the advantages we have in the Baltic Sea region in order to face the challenges of globalization, to stay competitive and on Top of Europe".
As vice chairmen of ScanBalt the board accepted the proposal from Hans-Robert Metelmann. The vice chairmanship is composed of Wolfgang Blank, CEO, BioCon Valley, Børge Diderichsen, Vice president, Novo Nordisk, and Jaanus Pikani, Chairman, Estonian Biotechnology Association.

About Hans-Robert Metelmann
Hans-Robert Metelmann is professor of head and neck surgery and a specialist in oncology at Greifswald University/Germany. He is member i.e. of the American Association for Cancer Research and Kunglige Fysiografiska Sellskapets i Lund. He served the Greifswald University as Dean of the medical faculty 1994-1996 and as Rector of the University 2000-2002. In 2002 he became Minister of Science in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern and stayed in office until 2006. During his time as minister he has enlarged his network with political leaders and stakeholders. Hans-Robert Metelmann has shown a genuine interest in ScanBalt since the beginning in 2001. For example he is cofounder of the Biotech Business Club Berlin in co-operation with Medicon Valley and BioCon Valley.
