Deutsche Bahn endows chair and research institute at Technische Universität Berlin

Dr. Kristina R. Zerges Presse- und Informationsreferat
Technische Universität Berlin

Institute develops scientific solutions for logistics companies - Launch of an international innovation network

Deutsche Bahn AG and Technische Universität Berlin plan to intensify their collaboration. Next year, DB AG will establish an endowed professorship of "Logistics Services and Transportation" at TU Berlin. The "Innovation Center for Transportation and Logistics" founded by DB AG and the University last year at the Institute of Technology and Management will be expanded into a full research institute at TU Berlin. The institute will promote and focus research and innovative solutions in the field of logistics. The objective is to create a joint international innovation network. Over the course of the next five years, DB will provide a total of EUR 1.7 million funds for the project.
"This commitment is aimed at strengthening Germany's position as a center of innovation and making a further contribution towards the development of the booming logistics industry," commented Dr. Norbert Bensel, Member of the Management Board for Transportation and Logistics at DB AG. "We are systematically promoting research into important logistics subjects from an objective, scientific viewpoint. At the same time, this provides our employees with a well-informed discussion platform where they can actively participate in the exchange of ideas beyond their own individual field of work."
"The research institute and the endowed chair are key factors in shaping the profile of TU Berlin and the logistics sector," stated Prof. Kurt Kutzler, President of TU Berlin. "This decision adds Deutsche Bahn AG to the ranks of major TU sponsors and establishes a strategic partnership which provides a sound basis for the joint realization of innovative research projects. The research institute will be a central point of contact for players in the logistics industry who wish to examine practical issues in cooperation with scientists and seek application-oriented solutions."
Prof. Frank Straube, head of the Innovation Center, stressed: "There is increasingly high demand for efficient solutions at the interface between transportation and logistics, which is why the research institute will be dedicated primarily to integrated logistics strategies in industrial, commercial and service enterprises." With the support of sponsors from trade and industry, the logistics department of TU Berlin, already a leading research and training institution, will evolve into an international research center. This cooperation with DB AG is intended to generate further impetus to encourage internationalization and know-how transfer.
