The general meeting of the Working Group of the German Federal Departmental Research Establishments in Berlin on 28 November 2007 confirmed the executive committee in office for two more years. Prof. Dr. Manfred Hennecke (Federal Institute for Materials Research and Testing, Berlin) has remained chairman, his deputies are Prof. Dr. Johannes Löwer (Paul Ehrlich Institute, Langen), Prof. Dr. Viktor Meineke (Institute for Radiobiology of the German Federal Armed Forces, Munich), Prof. Dr. Thomas Mettenleiter (Friedrich Loeffler Institute, Island Riems) and Dr. Wendelin Strubelt (Federal Office for Building and Regional Planning, Bonn). The mission and specific tasks of departmental research were also topics of discussion at the general meeting.
The 44 members of the Working Group - all Federal Institutes with specific research responsibilities - consider themselves as independent and integral constituents of the German research landscape. In addition to the scientific activity in their research, they advise politicians, administration and the public. They support the public administration and industry with their work in regulation and standardization as well as testing, certification and approval.
The working group actively participates in the current discussion about the concept of modern departmental research which has been initiated by the recommendations of the Board of Science. This concept should be shortly adopted by the Federal Government. Furthermore, the Working Group is developing and recommending optimum procedures ("best practice") for its members, for example for the promotion of the new scientific generation and quality assurance in the scientific advisory work for politics.
